Every month we bring you a tale of the absurd. An incident that goes beyond ridiculous and into the downright stupid. The source of this ludicrousness? Tabloid journalism, where else?
This month’s numpty is a senior a police officer who was initially sacked after he groped a female employees breast and thigh in two separate incidents. However, his dismissal was overturned after he challenged it in the High Court and he was re-hired.
The challenge related to an illness he was suffering from at the time of his original dismissal which meant he couldn’t give proper evidence. The High Court ordered that the dismissal procedure be re-run to allow a fair hearing and the same decision was reached, resulting in the second dismissal.
The lesson here is that even in cases of obvious misconduct – two separate incidents of sexual harassment – a fair hearing is still required to render a dismissal fair.
