From 6 April 2012, Employment Judges will be able to sit alone when considering unfair dismissal complaints. There will no longer be the traditional panel of 3 hearing every unfair dismissal case – see The Employment Tribunals Act 1996 (Tribunal Composition) Order 2012. This is an extension of the 2007 change which allowed Employment Judges to sit alone in straightforward cases such as wages, holiday and redundancy payment claims.

It is estimated that this will save the Tribunal Service over £3m per year in wing members’ fees and other associated costs.
