The Law Society Gazette has today reported on research undertaken by Lexicon Ltd calling for opt-out class actions to be piloted in employment tribunals.  The purpose of such class actions is to deal with the thousands of equal pay and discrimination claims which are clogging up the system and leading to lengthy delays.

The research indicates that many new cases involve a group bringing the same or similar claims against the same employer.  The report recommended piloting a scheme featuring, for example, class certification by tribunals, pre-approval of appropriate bodies to act as class representatives and fairness hearings to approve settlements.

Given that some of our claims are currently being listed for 2010 dates we would support any efforts to ensure that the tribunal systems remains a timely and expedient form of redress.
