What do Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have in common? The obvious answer is they are all supermarkets, the employment law answer is they are all facing multi-equal pay claims.

In a game of equal pay claim bingo the caller has announced Florist & Nun, Morrisons, you have completed your Big 4 Supermarket Equal Pay Bingo Slip and can now bask in the minor glory in a reasonably priced prize.

In the real world, this is the latest example of warehouse work and store work being suggested as similar and worthy of equal pay. In Morrison’s case, the claim has been speculatively valued at being worth £1billion. Warehouse staff, overwhelmingly male, are being paid more than checkout staff and other store staff who are overwhelmingly female.

Due to the number of Claimants, these cases are slow moving, the Asda one starting in 2014. However, we await the ETs decision in these cases which will determine whether the pay is equal AND whether the difference in pay is due to gender.
