Zero-hours contracts and the gig economy are two of the biggest employment law issues of the year. Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics suggests numbers have risen by a further 100,000 over the past 12 months.
The rise might be due to an increased awareness of the issue meaning workers know they are employed on a zero-hours contract rather than thinking they are on a different arrangement. However, the news still comes as a surprise given a bill that proposes to ban zero hours contracts had a second reading earlier this year. We are also still awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision in the Pimlico Plumbers case. An area of law that still needs much reform, hopefully sooner rather than later.
