Deaf snipers, knife wielding teachers,cake eating cafeteria workers, every month an employment law case gets swept in the perfect storm that is tabloid journalism. This month’s sensationalist story concerns a warehouse worker who was sacked for liking a picture of a co-workers fleece on Facebook.
Troy Garod, the employee in question, worked for Bertram Books and liked a picture of a colleague’s wolf print fleece which she had uploaded with the caption, “OMG I’m dying, sure there is a wolf fleece appreciation society haha”. The picture had been taken in the company’s warehouse and Troy liked the photo as he believed it was a joke.
However, he was then dismissed by text and the colleague who uploaded the photo was suspended and given a warning. The company believed that liking the photo was tantamount bullying and by liking the picture he was openly mocking his colleague. Pardon the pun but it is safe to say the employee might feel fleeced by this decision.
As our previous piece stated, bullying is a rising issue in the workplace, some experts have speculated whether bullying incidents are on the rise or have attitudes to social etiquette changed? In this circumstance it would seem to be the latter.
