According to this BBC article it has been confirmed that the default retirement age is to be scrapped.

This will please the Heyday, who challenged the default retirement age at the ECJ and lost.

For employers, this will mean that dismissing an employee because they have reaced 65 will be unfair (unless a set retirement age can be justified, for example because of the type of work the employee does) and employees will be entitled to continue working as long as they like provided they remain competant and medically capable of working.

More information about this will be included in our annual update seminar later this year – e-mail if you would like to register to receive information about the seminar.
